Stamped and decorative concrete turns a standard slab into something that looks like slate, brick, stone, or wood. Crews pour the concrete, add integral color or a surface-applied color hardener, press texture mats into it while it is still workable, then seal it. Other finishes in this category include stained, exposed aggregate, and polished concrete. In Charlotte, you will mostly see it on patios, pool decks, driveways, and walkways.
Red clay soil and wet winters make prep work matter. Ask each contractor about base compaction, control joint placement, and reinforcement. Look at finished jobs that are at least a couple of years old, since fading, cracking, and peeling sealer show up with time. Ask who does the stamping, and whether the crew will use a release agent and a quality sealer rated for outdoor use.
